[lug] java in iceweasel on debian

Hi,

I'm running iceweasel 3.5.6, but java seems not to work.
I tested it by going to java.com and clicking "do I have java".
I'm running debian squeeze 6.0.5, 64 bit.

This must be a common issue, but I'm not finding workable hits
on the web.

On iceweasel, edit->preferences->content shows java is enabled.
Yet any pages requiring java give me the message
  Additional plugins are required to display all the media on this page.
When I click "install missing plugins" I get 
  The following plugins are available
    Java runtime environment 1.6 u32
then next gives
  Java runtime environment 1.6 u32 not available
clicking "manually find missing plugins" gives a mozzilla page
  We're sorry, but we can't find what you're looking for

Is this a 64 vs 32 bit issue?
I've installed the sun jdk (did I need to?), so aptitude shows:
