Got into the machine with my Fedora 17 USB stick. The Xorg log files showed
that there was a fatal server error caused by a corrupted xorg.conf file. I
modified the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file which had had a few lines changed by
system-config-keyboard which had broken the file.........with the simple
addition of "Identifier "Default Layout",
And all is well.
Thanks to Orion for his help.

Well, you are probably booting into runlevel 3. Look in /etc/rc.d/rc3.d at
the S* scripts. It runs those in order.
I believe you can also press "I" at the start of the boot process to get an
interactive boot process which will ask you if you want to start each
service in turn.
