I generally use a Fedora Workstation Live USB key. But that works for me
because all of my Linux installs are some version of Fedora right now.
I'm not sure if its tools would work well for repairing a Ubuntu 14 install.

However, I seem to recall installing Ubuntu 14.4 via USB key back in the
day. I believe that almost all of the installers have the necessary
tools to also rescue / repair a disk install.
