Can't you just ssh into your home?  Use an ssh tunnel with a squid
proxy for private browsing through your house.  Don't even need vpn for
that if you set up your ssh/config to use multiple ssh ports on your
home router that map to specific machines, if necessary.  If you're
connection is good you can even run X clients via the -X option of ssh.
 Seems simpler than a VM, but YMMV.
