As I see that Dan is doing this on Zoom, I'm assuming that he not
only has a long history with Zoom, but as an intrepid techie has
delved into the controversies on Zoon being evil (if you think phone
tapping, opps! I mean spying or data sucking and selling).
This is especially interesting to me as I've heard all the same stuff
from Eric Yuan at Zoom saying all the same sounding similar stuff
that other data suckers say (Eventbrite, security -- "It depends on
what you mean by selling ..."
LINUX -- that we all love like a warm fuzzy puppy in a quarantine
video -- is Open Source Software (OSS), mostly. We believe (don't
we?) in OSS and I would hope would believe we could accomplish
essentially the same outcomes for tele-confernecing as does Zoom --
with much less suspected "evil".
Two names I've heard in the OSS arena for tele-conferencing are BBB
(Big Blue Button) with no downloaded client -- and Jitsi (
<https://jitsi.org/>https://Jitsi.org) that does use a downloaded
client (that you can hopefully trust -- as it's OSS).
I'm hoping we've finally learned that since the separation of homo
sapiens from the evolutionary lineage with Lemmings over 100 years
ago -- we still share many characteristics. Recently we've learned
that those characteristics are exacerbated by the recombinant DNA
emerging from rural Wyoming suspected to be due to novel
Minion-Bootlicker virus that combines Sheep DNA with Cowboy DNA and
we see compulsive emergency herd seeking behavior -- "There's no time
to navigate -- we gotta go -- now".
If the OSS community can't get it together on this one there may not
ever be a vaccine available. Because of that emergency and no time to
think about it -- I'm certainly offering, encouraging (begging ...
nawww), the use of the dormant little OSS group I pay for --
https://www.meetup.com/Boulder-Northern-Area-Open-Source-Software-Community-Meetup/
if that might help us coordinate our effects to share info and skills.
I pay for this group in hopes it might someday, eventually help us
work on Public Infrastructure Software -- and tele-conferencing seems
like a perfect fit for that (though I am still manifesting for
political process, eventually).
