The reason is too much context switch. If I have to think "am I in vi, in
gmail or in the shell prompt?" And then, I have to think "the right
shortcut for doing X in the context Y is with shortcut Z", by the time I
have the answer, it'll be much slower than just pushing the arrow and wait
its snail speed to the end of the line. But that's beyond the point of this
discussion. The point is that these shortcuts work out of the box in any
linux box I have used since 1999. I was shocked to find that in the "user
friendly" Mac they don't and it seems close to impossible (if not actually
impossible) to fix the problem.
