[lug] Debian Time

Hi all,

I am running Debian 2.1, and it seems that sometime in the last day or so,
the various timekeepers have gotten out of sync. Here's what I mean:
When I do a date command, e:g: I get this result:

/home/ruskell# date
Tue Oct 12 13:00:23 MDT 1999

Which is 100% correct.

An immediately subsequent commant reveals:
:/home/ruskell# tail -f /var/log/messages
Oct 12 08:46:16 poisson -- MARK --
Oct 12 09:06:16 poisson -- MARK --
Oct 12 09:26:16 poisson -- MARK --
Oct 12 09:46:16 poisson -- MARK --
Oct 12 10:06:16 poisson -- MARK --
Oct 12 10:26:16 poisson -- MARK --
Oct 12 10:46:16 poisson -- MARK --
Oct 12 11:06:16 poisson -- MARK --
Oct 12 11:26:16 poisson -- MARK --
Oct 12 11:46:16 poisson -- MARK --

Which indicates that /var/log/messages is somehow an hour behind.
The dates in xconsole are also an hour behind.

But, the dates in my auth.log appear correctly:
home/ruskell# cat /var/log/auth.log
Oct 12 12:06:33 poisson su[17658]: + ttyp0 ruskell-root
Oct 12 12:38:08 poisson su[17681]: + ttyp0 ruskell-root
Oct 12 12:46:05 poisson su[17709]: + ttyp0 ruskell-root
Oct 12 13:09:11 poisson su[17732]: + ttyp0 ruskell-root

I have an /etc/timezone file, which contains MDT, indicating daylight
time, and I am not using GMT.

How can a system get out of sync like this, and how might I fix it?

Thanks,

Todd
