[lug] sportster modem questions/problems

I recently inherited a USR sportster 56K modem, and have been
trying to get it working on my linux system (approximately RH6.0
with kernel 2.3.4x).... Sometimes works, but also some strangeness.
I'm probably doing some simple error, any comments appreciated....
	1) How can I configure my linux so that the modem uses ttyS2
(com3)? It works as ttyS1, but when I try to set it to com3 (with
either int 2/9 or 5), my linux fails to boot, seems to hang soon after
enabling swap space (/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit)
	2) When the modem is on ttyS1 (com2), it works once, then
the serial port seems to be blocked. minicom will open it, and
if I then exit minicom with no reset, the modem will connect once
more. This is true if I use pppd, efax, or cu to connect to the modem.
Seems some strange interaction between the modem and serial driver.
My old external modem doesn't have any such problem, works repeatedly just
as expected.
