Beware of braindead 'winmodem' modems and avoid deleting ~192 meg partitions used for sleep mode.  Most laptops work.  The interesting task is finding a laptop without the microsoft office/works tax.  Journaling file systems (raiser or ext3) are nice for laptops that are powercycled frequently.
