[lug] Kernel compiling

Indeed!  The biggest problem for newbies is getting past the fear that
compiling the kernel is going to cause their system to fail if something
goes wrong.  Somehow we need to let people know that compiling the kernel
DOESN'T affect your system UNTIL you copy the binary kernel to
the root or boot directory AND set your boot loader to point to it.  We
also need to make clear that you can leave the old kernel in place so that
if the new kernel doesn't boot you simply reload the old kernel to fix
things.
