sounds like a server bug alright...probibly something to do with the
software cursor option that many video cards have built in. 
Under the "device" section of your /etc/X11/XF86Config file you might
have an option you can turn on something like "sw_cursor" or the
like.

well, you might be able to do:

rpm -qa | grep XFree

and see whats installed. 
You should also be able to do a:

xinit >& foo

or

startx >& foo

from a vty (text console) and then look at file foo for version
information.
