Maybe it doesn't know where the DNS server is for name lookups. Your DNS
server needs to be listed in /etc/resolv.conf. Probably some line like
"search colorado.edu", followed by 1 or 2 lines like:
nameserver 128.138.238.18

(that is just colorado.edu, it isn't the name server, just a sample).
