[lug] TrueType fonts in X

Hello LUGers. I'm trying to figure out how to use my M$ TrueType fonts with XFree86-4 under RedHat 7.0. So far, I think what's holding me back is the usage of 'mkfontdir'. My understanding is that the fontserver and X server can now handle TrueType without the use of xfstt or equivalent dedicated server.

What I have so far:

'chkfontpath' shows my TrueType directory in the path
'ls' in my TrueType dir shows Verdana.ttf (among others)

But, when I run 'mkfontpath /usr/.../TrueType', it creates a file containing only a '0' and nothing else!

Do I need a fonts.scale file? If so, how do I choose the values for all those odd elements between the dashes?

Confused,
John
