I was eventually able to get ssh to work, though pserver is still being
stupid.

I suspect something like this is correct. It runs as root but then gets
twisted during uid change.

Probably this is a bug.

It correctly asks for the user password that I tell it to login with,
and that user does not have root access. Just another config snafu.

I tried this briefly, with no luck. Since ssh is now working, there is
no dire need to solve it now.
