I'll agree with the others that it sounds like a firewall problem.

$ sudo /usr/sbin/ntpdate time.nist.gov
10 Jan 11:22:43 ntpdate[13880]: step time server 192.43.244.18 offset
-25.033596 sec

$ rpm -q ntp
ntp-4.0.99k-15

Subject: [lug] ntpdate fails on RH7.1 (KRUD 2001-08-01 with updates)

I have ntp 4.0.99k on my gateway box and every time I run ntpdate I get
this message:

ntpdate[11708]: no server suitable for synchronization found

It doesn't matter what servers I specify, I always get that. I turned off
the ntp daemon and move /etc/ntp.conf to /etc/ntp.conf-, but neither
helped.

On another box I have ntp 4.1.0 running on RH 7.2 (KRUD 2001-12-01). I can
set the date with ntpdate on that box just fine.

Anyone know what is broken with th 4.0.99k version and if there is a way
around this? I haven't run krud2date yet since it isn't installed on the
gateway box. I've been updating that box with Red Carpet and the Red Hat
Network.
