I have really nice results with pdfelatex to go from my latex to pdf.
But I suppose the reader itself might matter, or maybe available fonts
(I don't even attempt to do anything special with fonts, I use whatever
my latex template wants). Possibly I just have a good font selection on
my X11, maybe it is also part of the conversion process. But try
pdflatex or pdfelatex to go from latex to pdf.
