[lug] My folly: Lucent soft modem AMR.

Hello,

Recently I came across such a good deal for an IBM
ThinkPad R30 that I couldn't resist. I was able to check
out hardware compatibility before I purchased and everything
checked out OK, except I wasn't able to nail down the
modem, which in this case turns out to be a Lucent Technologies
Soft Modem AMR (probably should be placed in the category
of `software'). So I am dead in the water as far as this
`modem' goes.

Presently on the R30 I have a parallel connector, video,
two USB connectors, but no classic serial connector.

According to linmodems.org, US Robotics makes a USB
compatible modem (US Robotics 56K V.92 External Faxmodem --
model USR5686D). Would I be mistaken in thinking
I can connect this modem via the USB connector and have
the kernal recognize it when I install Red Hat Linux 7.2?

Alternatively, does anybody have other suggestions that
would put me on the path of setting up a working modem?

Thank you and regards,

David Stepaniak
