If you are on a budget (who isn't?) and don't need Zippy 9000 4D video or a 
nine gazbigahurts processor I recommend getting an older IBM that's still 
under IBM's warranty.  They are INCREDIBLE about standing behind them.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one that didn't even work, as long as all the parts 
are there and it hasn't been obviously abused.

The only downside to consider is that you can basically count on having to buy 
a new battery.

On the upside almost all their stuff works with Linux, and they generally even 
have system specific Linux help on their website.
