Sorry to reply twice, asleep at the wheel.  Regarge FireWire:

So Linux isn't incredibly picky, then?  I guess I had thought of
FireWire as still experimental.  I didn't realize they were that cheap,
either.  Can you really tell the difference, speed-wise, under Linux?
