[lug] Digital cameras

I have an olympus D-550 3mpixel camera that I got at costco. There are
other places that have them but costco has the best price.
Over all, I'm really happy with it. I have a usb cable that plugs into
the camera and the computer. No other adapters necessary. It takes
movies (quick time) and also has a video out jack so you could make silent
movies to a vcr or something. Costco also sells memory for $50/128mb
(this one uses SmartMedia). It's my fisrt and only digital camera, so
consider the sample size.

A friend of mine got a tiny digital camera to take snow boarding. It
worked great until it got cold. Then the battery power dropped and the
pictures disappeared.

Sean's right about the power up time problem. It does take about 2.5 sec.
to "wake up". That's no big deal for me.

Here's the big deal though -- auto focus takes a little time. This means
that I often get these weird pictures about 1/2 sec. after the "moment".
There are two ways to work around it though -- put it in infinite focus or
hold the button down partially to have the focus stay where it is.

Oh, another weird feature is the "panorama" mode of the camera. You can
only use it with the Olympus SmartMedia. Weird, but oh well. The camera
comes with a smaller Olympus card.
