I have some krud-8 images on my laptop. I will be at the Hacking
Society meeting, so I should be able to burn you some. 
Also have 9 images. I would just reccomend you go to 9.

Yeah, the new threading model breaks some apps. You can disable it and
make it act like the old threading by exporting that LD_ASSUME_KERNEL
env variable before starting your app.

Thats hardly true. You can boot from the rescue cd and remove the
broken package and install the correct one.

I think redhat has been about as agressive as they always
have. Sometimes they upgrade something thats too bleeding and people
complain, sometimes they don't upgrade something fast enough and
people complain. ;) 

I think they keep reasonably up to date on things. If you want
something newer you can always pull down the rawhide package.

I'm sure someone could get some debian cd's for you. 
You can also install from a small set of packages and download the
rest of the install.
