VERY good point.

I can copy all of /etc around between identically configured machines, 
edit network configuration items and hostname information and pretty 
much know the other machine will work in a data center environment. 
Many of the files in /etc can be "pushed" from a central config file so 
they're all the same...

/var -- no way.  Typically can't do that.  And /var/log ?  Ick.
