For many of us, I suspect it depends on the quality of the code that 
we're attempting to modify.  If it's well documented and formatted, many 
experienced users can often hack away with some degree of success.  The 
first few attempts are usually painful, but experience certainly helps.

Most changes I make are purely for personal adaptation, and rarely are 
they coded well enough to bother checking back into the source tree.
