Knoppix will do what you want.  Also lnx-bbc, maybe.  But you have to 
figure out what drivers the HP writer needs.  If it is supported by the 
usual SCSI drivers then Knoppix will work.  If not it will only work if 
there is a driver that supports it and the driver is included in Knoppix.

What writer is is, exactly?
