I can't speak for your purposes, but I can tell you after using many 
different modems that not all brands are equal. Even two brands that use 
the same chipset are not always equal. Make darn sure it is not a 
"winmodem". And if ability to operate on noisy phone lines matters, get 
a US Robotics high end.

A stray note, perhaps not useful, maybe it is...many motherboards have 
"wake on lan" (WOL) feature, that is integrated with the built-in LAN. I 
believe there might be some modems with pins available to jumper to WOL 
pins, you might check on that...in which case both your modem and your 
motherboard will matter.
