Hundreds of millions, doing Thawte (SSL certificates), which was purchased
by Verisign...

The distribution isn't entirely run by volunteers.  Canonical is working to
commercialize and offer support for Ubuntu, and a lot of the Ubuntu people
are Canonical employees.  So, it's not really volunteers that are making
sure that security fixes are back-ported to 10 different versions.
