The SDSC supercomputers run on the Internet, at least as of 2003.  They 
aren't mainframes, really, but they are a counter-example to your

(Even if they wanted to run behind a firewall they'd never found one 
that could handle OC-192 data rates.  Which they loved to point out to 
firewall vendors.)
