[lug] No space bar in MySQL prompt

Hi,

I cannot type or paste a space into the mysql prompt; e.g., after

$ mysql -u root
mysql>

I cannot get a space character to appear; pressing the space bar results 
in an error beep.

Is this some sort of readline problem?  I found 
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=387966, but readline4 is 
no longer an available package.

I am running Ubuntu 7.04/feisty with mysql-client-5.0 5.0.38-0ubuntu1. 
This is a pretty generic installation.
