I'd qualify that. People think "Software RAID" should be able to handle 
that. In reality, SW RAID under Linux is virtual useless for maintaining 
availability through a failure. SW RAID under Linux can prevent data 
loss in the event of a drive failure, but it's worthless in terms of 
keeping your system from crashing.

High quality HW RAID OTOH CAN handle it.
