What kind of connector? If it is HDMI, then the query is through the "DDC" wire (an i2c protocol powered by the video card). Some other types also provide DDC, e.g., DisplayPort. An old style 15-pin D-Sub VGA has no such wire and thus there is no ability to query a monitor like that. Thus the older monitors have a mandatory "driver disk" (which is really just a database of parameters which EDID would provide if it existed).
