Yes, I know the answer to the cost of doing all of this is to consider what
your data is worth to you. Offhand, I can think of only a couple files
which would really mess me up if I lost them. The rest of it would be
irritating, but not catastrophic.

I recall, years ago, an idea for a mutual backup network among trusted
friends. I think it involved using the Limewire private network capability.
I tried getting the Limewire thing set up with another guy, and we had
trouble with authentication, IIRC, so we didn't get very far with it.

For some of us, setting up something secure using various P2P facilities,
OwnCloud, etc. wouldn't be very difficult, though again weighing the
various factors influences such choices. I could feel pretty good with
simply rotating a couple thumb drives in a friend's gun safe, but then
there'd be the necessity of driving over on a regular basis.

One advantage of a local offsite is that if there's a network outage, I can
still have physical access to my backup with a 15-30 minute road trip, even
if the backup is done over the network.
