I strongly suggest that you do not do backups using cp and a vfat device. 
Doing this makes it easy to lose important file system attributes (such as
permission, owner, symbolic links, etc.) that do not correspond to vfat. 

If you must do this rather than an archiving utility like tar (which is much
safer), look into the umsdos file system, and make sure you are using the
correct options on cp (such as -a).
