cp -R is very ugly when following special file types
(consider all the symbolic links in /usr/lib/*) tar
-xf /dev/? is prefered for the task your after.
If your using vfat to backup and restore linux I can
only offer you a compass. Your lost. In fact if you
read my earlier reply youll find a fs is not required.
