This almost never works, but it might be worth a shot.  Assuming your
device is /dev/hda, run:

dd if=/dev/hda of=hda.out

Even if this command completes, it most likely won't be a valid image.
But you may be able to spelunk through the resulting file using
strings and pull out important stuff like the contents of your passwd file.
