Not only that, but the platters have a surprisingly nice tone -- you can
make wind chimes or something similar from them.

Well, not better news - but he may benefit from it anyway.

When you do replace that hard drive, be sure to take the old one apart and
salvage its refrigerator magnets.  Those puppies are STRONG!
