[lug] The naming authority

I'm coding a Networking class and there's a statement saying "... an
organization can request a class of network addresses from the InterNIC
(also known as Network Solutions), the current Internet naming
authority,..."
Wasn't that monopoly busted up a couple years ago? There has to be a
central unit keeping track and as far as I know it is ICANN, but isn't
this an incorrect statement? We discussed this back in Sept. but I'm
wondering if things have changed.
Thanks,
John
