Which kernel are you running?  Which chipset?  I seem to remember having some problem with the 2.2.x running VIA chipset with DMA enabled.  You might try
disabling DMA to see if it clears up.  I've not had any problems since upgrading to the 2.4.x (currently at 2.4.1-ac10) with DMA enabled.
