Well, I just confirmed, by downloading and installing lilo-21.6.1 ( with the help of my trusty linux firewall!), 
that the lilo that comes with SuSE 7 (download)
DOES NOT handle the lba32 option. hmmm, now, who in their right mind would ship a linux distribution
with an OLD lilo, that can't handle lba32? I have yet to really tell if that was the whole problem.

Suse 7 also ships with the old rpm.

arggggg.... 

It _seems_ the new lilo, and turning off UDMA in the bios helped.
