The book

Lamport, Leslie, LaTeX - A Document Preparation System, Users
Guide and Reference Manual 2nd Ed., Addison Wesley, 1994,
   ISBN 0-201-52983-1, pg 228

says

"Documents prepared for LaTeX2e begin with a \documentclass command
(Section 2.2.2). LaTeX2e realizes it is processing a LaTeX 2.09 input
file and enters compatibility mode when it encounters a LaTeX 2.09
\documentstyle command. Most LaTeX 2.09 input files will work with
LaTeX2e. However, an error may occure if LaTeX2e reads and auxiliary
file produced by LaTeX 2.09, so it's a good idea to delate such files
    before running LaTeX2e.

The document styles of LaTeX 2.09 have become document
classes. SliTeX has been eliminated; slides are produced using the
slides document class. Standard document-style options that
controlled formatting, such as twoside, have become document-class
options, and are specified as optional arguments to the \documentclass
command. Other document-sytle options have become pacakges, loaded
with the \usepackage commadn (Section 2.2.2). Most nonstandard
document-style options will work as LaTeX2e packages."
