Alledgedly the incompatible WinModem problem has been resolved. The
manufacturer responded to the article by stating that they would (as of
early May, IIRC) start using only Linux compatible modems. (I'm not sure if
that means it will be a linux-compatible winmodem ,or a "real" modem.)

That blurb references an article about one person's experience
installing Mandrake and some other distro on a Wal-mart naked PC. IIRC,
that machine came with a WinModem. Other than that, it worked fine.
