[lug] e-mail merge from spreadsheet

Does anyone know of a good way to do an email merge for data in a
spreadsheet?  Openoffice will do this fine if I want to print a mail
merge, but I can't get it to convert to document to plain text and e-mail
it. It only knows how to communicate with kmail and netscape mail (from
tools, options, external programs, send document as e-mail mssage,
profiles) and not mail / sendmail (thanks for the suggestion of ssmtp --
that's just want I wanted) and besides, it still just sends my text
document as an attached openoffice document.

Do I need an e-mail program that can do a mail merge? Is there a way to
get openoffice or some other program to generate a much of e-mails with
dynamic content based on a spreadysheet and send them out? I'm looking to
avoid a script, since I'd like to just type the e-mail in my (some) e-mail
program (evolution?) and just do a mail merge right there.
