I'd agree on that, sounds like the config is wrong. Possibly aggravated
by some missing installation setup, the var might refer to a /var/
subdirectory. Assuming Mandrake is the same as RH here, there should be
a /etc/rc.d/init.d/ subdirectory, and the xinetd init script there. This
script should in turn allow root to manually cd there, and run "./xinetd
start", "./xinetd stop", "./xinetd status", and "./xinetd restart". Try
this by hand, see what it says; at the same time, watch
/var/log/messages with "tail -f /var/log/messages". If var keeps popping
up, perhaps it is talking about /var/lock/ files and subdirectories not
being there to do some kind of locking on.
