[lug] X11 fonts question

Hi,
I'm running Redhat 9, and can select fonts for a Terminal by
using the menus: Edit / current profile.
But some of those fonts don't show up as X11 fonts for xfontsel.
For example, the Terminal profile gui shows the Miriam font,
but that isn't in xfontsel.
Similarly, the Terminal profile gui has the Luxi Mono font in lots of
sizes ... 8,9,10,11,12,13,14,16,18, etc. But the xfontsel version
of Luxi Mono comes in only one size: 17.
How can I use all these Terminal fonts, and varied sizes, in classic X11 apps?
How can Terminal use fonts that don't appear in the
/etc/X11/fs/config file?
Many thanks,
Steve
