You're thinking about backing up user data at this sage of the game?
No wonder my Dad (the "mainframe guy") is always trashing us "open systems
guys" :-(
Anyway, have you considered an intermediate upgrade? Say to RH 7.3 . . .
As to patching up, I never tried to use RHN with a RH6 box. If you have
trouble getting it to work consider downloading all of errata (like "wget
-c ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/updates/6.2/en/os/i386/*") then
do "rpm -Uvh --freshen *.rpm". It will probably choke on some packages
(notably packages that have multiple updates) keep junking them until ya
get a bunch of hashes.
