I hope I didn't inadvertantly imply that you were condemning Red Hat.
I meant that in a general sense.

Agreed.  For some reason, people feel the need to associate products with
a brand.  (i.e., Kleenex, Xerox, etc.)  Red Hat managed to land that coup,
although I don't know why. (if you really think about it, Slackware
should have inherited that mantle.)  To their credit, they've managed to
resist exploiting it.  Looking back at Sun's "We put the dot in dot com"
posing, I think we can all be happy that the "Red Hat IS Linux" campaign
never happened.
