WAG follows:
I would guess that the default font wasn't being found so it substituted
poorly. The things to look at would be xsession output (usu.
~/.xsession-errors) as well as the font server (does Mandrake use
xfs?). I'd also make sure that the font files had been processed
appropriately and that permissions were suitable.
I'd also look in the usu. logs in /var/log
