I have to admit that it doesn't fit the "works under linux" criteria, exactly,
but you might try out pdfcreator:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/
It just looks like a standard printer, but prints to a pdf file. I've found
it quite satisfactory in the windows world.
