Sometimes BIOS settings for LBA mode or not cause this. During install, 
I think fedora offers to use LBA mode or not (and usually the default is 
right), perhaps Debian does too. Choose the opposite of what you have, 
or change it in the BIOS option. Warning: Any writes to the disk with 
this mode change will destroy all data written with the other choice, 
including entire filesystems.
