Just wanted to thank Joe for the demonstration on Ubuntu.  I went home and 
plugged in the CD in Live mode and even installed some packages to the RAM 
disk.  Looked pretty good so far; I'll give it another whirl this weekend.

I happened to come across this article that seems to answer the "how do you 
pronounce Xubuntu" question straight from the horse's mouth:

is an xfce-based environment, but only on a specialist computer where it 
particularly suits the hardware and the application that I have there...
