If it is gnome-terminal (and some others may do this also), all terminal
windows are run by a single process.  So, if this one process crashes,
all windows vanish.

Something is crashing your terminal program, or something is killing it.

I *have* had OOM or ulimit kill my gnome-terminal before, when I set the
 saved scroll-back lines to a ridiculously large number.
